Melissa F. 7th Hour

Yesterday was one of those Tuesdays where everyone seemed oh so desperate just to even make it to seventh hour. As I entered Mr. Becker's room to see that all of the students shared my less-than-thrilled-to-be-here expression I knew that this was going to be a looooong class. There were no handouts on the table which reminded each student that today we would have to speak up and say what we thought of the book, 1984. All of the students sat silent and expressionless as we waited for Mr. Becker to do his beginning of class routine. As he sat at his desk taking attendance he declared he would like for everyone to get out their responses... this recieved absolutely no movement out of a single student in the room and let go an "uh-oh" out of him. Then just like clockwork comes the T.A. from the guidance office bringing a pass to flee one lucky soul from the English IV class ahead of us. She exits and the floor is open for discussion... We basically all individually shared our opinions of the book.. and with the exception of a few, it seems many hate it... I mean "minorly disgust" it. As we all shared our intense confusion, a slight weight was lifted from many of the students shoulders as they realized that almost all shared the same frustrations and confusions. The discussion began to end as the end of class drew near. And I personally came to the conclusion that if "Ignorance is Strength" when it comes to the book... we are all really strong people.

Angie H., 3rd hour
Through my observation today,I saw and heard a lot in class I wouldn't have normally picked up on. To start the class off, Tarah read her scribe notes from yesterday. It seems as though Nick always manages to work his way into everyone's scribe notes, yesterday being about his plans to open a Mcdonalds, and today being flustered at me for not remembering our past classes together. After that, Mr. Becker came around highlighting the papers of those who finished their discussion notes, signaling the beginning of our analysis on the book we have been reading, 1984. Everyone expressed their opinions, questions, and thoughts they had thus far. Although most were confused about the book and its' meaning, some were able to decipher questions and explain how they interpreted it. Garrett impressed the class with his wide range of vocabulary, using the word "sudotruths" which left some intimidated. As people expressed their opinions, Mr. Becker had a checklist of them to tally points, which marked their grade. Everyone agreed that since we are still early in the book, most of it is left unsolved to us. Our discussion lasted to the end of class, and suddenly broke with the irritable ring of the bell.

Through observation today I picked up on things in class I wouldn't have normally noticed. To start off, Tarah read her scribe notes from yesterday. Nick always seems to be a part of everyone's scribe notes, yesterday being about opening a Mcdonalds, and today he was flustered at me for not remembering past classes we had together. After that Mr. Becker came around and highlighted people's discussion notes, signaling the beginning of our analysis on the book we are currently reading, 1984. Although most were confused at the beginning of our discussion about the book, we all had a steady flow of conversation. Garrett impressed the group with his range of vocabulary, using the term "sudotruths," which stunned Nick. The discussion was helpful in the way that deciphered some questions people had and analyzed the book. Mr. Becker had a checklist of people who contributed to the conversation in order to give them the correct grades. He was also helping us with anything we were confused about. The discussion lasted up until the bell, where the irritable ring signaled us to leave.

Robert Hartweck, 1st hour

when i walked into class i was just as tired as if it was a monday. the last thing i wanted to do was talk and have to be thinking all hour, but of course thats what we did. The whole hour we just had one big disscusion over the book we are reading 1984. Going into class i was a little concerned about the discussion because i felt the book up to this point was very confusing and didn't really make much sence. Frotunatly though the whole class pretty much felt the same way i did so it was easy to discuss the book because i could actually relate. Even though i was extremly tired I'm glad we had this disscusion day because i feel like it helped me get a better grasp on whats happenning in this story.
