J. Becker--All Hours

To the library!

Predictably, it's one of my very favorite places, and ours here at FHC is, for a high school library, really pretty impressive.

When I think of libraries, one thing that always strikes me is those rows and rows of books, many of which just sit there, year after year, gathering dust, slowly crumbling. No one checks these books out. _The Mating Habits of the West African Greater Kudu_ one offers. Another, _Mice Krispies_. No one will read these books.

I think of the authors, sitting somewhere in an office. Maybe he has a day job as an insurance adjuster. Maybe he wonders if the kids are reading his book.

But they are not.

Totally unrelated, I guess, just one of the things I think about when I think about libraries.

* * *

We came, we saw, we conquered.

I read the scribe notes, took attendance, made the groups, and students set to work.

There was, for a few, some anxiety. I fielded a lot of questions that began with "Do you want us to . . . ?" There was also a good-sized dose of "Is this the kind of information you want?"

I must not have made clear enough this fact: I have no particular set of information in mind about your topic. Anything remotely useful that you turn up will be just fine for this assignment.

Anyhow, most seemed to get rolling pretty quickly and stay rolling without much urging on my part. I was somewhat concerned by how little I saw members of each group communicating with each other, but if anything important wasn't shared Friday, I suppose it can be figured out Monday.

Class ended with me reminding students of the timeline (prepare Monday, present Tuesday) and wishing them a good weekend.

Hope it was.
