Jessica D. 7th Hour

As I walked into class today being a typical Tuesday, I was having a pretty good day ready to come into 7th hour and read more about the book. Of course with Mr. Becker being gone and all he informed us yesterday to be on our best behavior for the sub. So as the class progresses to take place I notice up on the board to remind us that Section 2 response and that we will have a reading quiz tomorrow before our discussion. As the class is slowly but surely moving along seems like forever but I see my fellow classmates some looking around because there finished reading or other that have their noses to the books reading diligently and them were writing their responses for Wednesday. But to my surprise the classroom was very quite work day and the sub was observing us students occasionally to see if were actually doing our work and not goofing off which we weren’t. Then I notice that some of the students also, had to finish their power points so they could present in front of the class tomorrow but the interesting part was that the student tried several computers to get logged in to do the power point for the quick and dirty project. Well Overall the class was well behaved. In the last five minutes of class I noticed again that almost everyone started packing up their belongings and some were still reading there book until the end of class also, of course everyone was so anxious to get out of 7th hour an just go home and relax.

Tarah H., 3rd hour
Its Tuesday, and its presenstation day. One by one my classmaates and I got up and presented our Quick and Dirty Research. The first group presented Daphne duMaurier the author of our book Rebecca. We learned about her childhood and how even then gender roles facinated her just as we see just through the first two sections of the novel. The next group then expanded our knowlegde on the year 1938. Many things, important events took place during the 30's FDR was president, WWII was on the break, detective stories had a huge following, and Jazz and Swing music was on the rise. Another thing that was invented during that time was the lie dector, guess that was a dissappointing thing for some. The next group began talking about Sigmond Frued, he studied cerebral palsy and came up with the idea of ID, EGO and SupereEGO. Each of these ideas had their own spin off, ID was about the child like portion the "pleasure principal" EGO was about our concious part of our brain, in other words our needs and drives. The SuperEGO was ideal and exncompassed the ideal moral code. He studied dreams that illustrated logic and the unconcious mind, which we can link Chapter 1 to with the dream about Manderly. Then another group presented what Oedipus was. Which basically meant that a boy would kill his father and marry his mother. The group talked about the child(both male and female)having an atrraction to the parent of the opposite sex. We then heard about Gothic Literature also known as Gothic Horror and how it related to Rebecca. Gothic Literature was defined as a story creating suspence and romance all in one novel. It was said that Gothic Horror created a scene of a women in distress, a castle, omens, blood-curdling villianly and other books such as Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Frankstein, Shutter Island all contained this Gothic Literature just as we will come to see Rebecca has. The last group ended with talking about the Narators dream and what they took from it. As we all read chapter 1 and the narator put as back in the house at Manderly, we found that some of the narators expierence was horrible and didn't want to be remember but all in all that Manderly was a beautiful place and that it did have some very good memories there and if she had the chance to go back that she would. As the last group ended we were all eager to get to lunch even though no one really wanted to Mix it Up.

1st Hour
As I entered class I was unconcious to the fact that today was to be my day of observation. This state of mind continued throughout the entire class period. I am not sure whether it was simply my rather impresive lack of memory or an attempt to repress the thought of having to write this short essay, but the notion never entered my head untill now. This possible use of one of Frauds defense mechanisms nearly cost me participation points. However, I managed to "remember" my responsobility to education in time to earn my points for the day. But enough of my random, yet educational ramblings.
The clas consisted of each group in turn presenting their topic to the rest of the class. Interestingly I realized that many of my classes share a common topic. Freud and his woorks seem to be included in my psychology class as SCC and sociology which are both understandable, but to encounter this subject in my english class seemed odd.
As the class proceeded the presentations rolled along like a train, one group after the other, with myself bringing up the rear as the caboose, finishing my presentation on gothic literature in time to enjoy a few minutes of daydreaming before the bell rang to anounce the end of first hour.
