I think our first discussion went very well. Usually first discussions are pretty quiet and everyone is afraid to talk, so I was really surprised when almost everyone in our class contributed. I had you sophomore year and when we had discussions everyone was really quiet, so I was afraid that that was how this discussion would tern out. The positives of learning by having a discussion are that you get to hear from 20 or so other people and you get to see how they view the book. Also, they might bring something up that you didn’t catch or understand which is really helpful. Some drawbacks about discussions are how everyone wants to ask a question at the same time, but you can only talk about one thing at a time. I don’t think we really need to improve anything on our next discussion. The only thing I can think that we should try to improve in having only one person talk at a time. A lot of people in our class would shout out comments or questions when and we wouldn’t be finished answering or talking about the previous question.

I think what was good about the discussion, was a chance to hear and learn what others think about the book. This book forces the reader to look at society in a critical way. I enjoyed finding out how other people responded to the book, especially since this book made me think about the power and control of the U.S. government. I find myself getting a little freaked out by this book. The drawback is that not everyone participates, so you’re not able to hear what everyone thinks. The benefit of learning this way is a chance for you to think, analyze, and respond to others’ opinions. It isn’t just writing down your own thoughts and reactions. Discussion gives you the chance to hear the ideas of others and to look at the book in a different way. The main way to improve our discussions is to make everyone talk or at least have one comment, so that everyone has a chance to express themselves. Maybe people can suggest questions for discussions. I love when people give really detailed answers. This book really makes you think, and when you don’t understand something, you can discuss it. That’s why I think these discussions are great, because you learn a lot from each other. There just needs to be more people participating. There’s a lot of dead silence. We need to improve that. I hope people feel comfortable expressing themselves. There’s no Thought Police!!

I think it went real well. Everyone made valid points, and was involved and interacting. The positives of learning this way is that you can hear different view points rather than just your own. Another positive is that you can ask questions about what you don't know or don't understand. Asking questions helps clarify anything that didn't make sense to you when reading. When you ask a question it helps everybody out. A good percentage of the time, each person benefits from your question. There were many instances in 1984 that were very unclear to me, but after hearing what everybody had to say. I realized, oh yeah that's what it means. There really aren't many drawbacks to this, I can only think of one and that would be for someone who's cautious about speaking in front of the class not knowing what to expect. I'll admit that's how I felt when we first started, but as we got into the groove of things I realized this wasn't so bad after all. As far as improving the experience I think it went well and I think this time more people, including myself won't be as hesitant to make their point, because no comment made from anybody was shot down or made fun of.
