Yes, people should be concerned about the trend toward more and more surveillance in today’s society. The youth and the people in their twenties of today’s society are so used to cameras and technology being everywhere, that we don’t know any better. We’re so used to those types of things being around that it doesn’t bother us. However, even though we don’t realize it, our privacy is being invaded everyday all around us. There are cameras on stoplights, Google earth, cameras in stores, and people taking pictures on their digital cameras everywhere invading our privacy. Also, many people can be put on a list for just checking out certain books in libraries. People are also tracked by their credit cards, house calls, cell phone calls, bank accounts, emails, and internet websites. However, people are ignorant to this and it doesn’t faze them. I think the people in today’s society should be more concerned with the over abundant amount of surveillance and should stand against it.

Yes, people should be concerned about the increased use of surveillance because it can be abused and takes away more and more of our freedom. One of the major affects of this surveillance is the loss of our Ninth Amendment rights-freedom to privacy. Webcams are everywhere: parking lots, stores, schools, offices, dressing rooms, restrooms in stores, ATM’s, banks, and practically any public place you can think of. The reason for these surveillance cameras is for security and to protect businesses against theft. However, it’s getting to the point where people are being observed and judged constantly. Now they have cameras at stop lights and pictures are taken of cars if they run a red light. How much is this costing us? Not only the cameras, but the people hired to watch the cameras and the film footage. Cameras in cell phones allow people to capture images of anyone, at anytime. Often, you’ll see pictures taken by someone’s cell phone on the web. They can take pictures to make fun of people or even to blackmail them. Like Winston, you have to assume someone, somewhere has a camera and you can be watched and filmed at any moment. GPS systems in cars and cell phones allow people to know where you’re at. Freedom and independence are not the same now as it was in the days before these technological inventions.

Yes, the surveillance of todays society is overdone. for instance, the traffic light cameras that take pictures of not only your liscence plate but your face also. Just to give you a simple ticket should not require taking a photo of every view of your car. Plus the amount of money spent towards this surveillance is attrociouse and has not even been active in most of the areas of stop lights making it a waste of money and time that was put into it! antoher part of surveilance that has gone to far would be the internet. watching over students facebook and myspace on what they do outside of school grounds should not affect them. however if the students were to run into trouble with the law in the process then actions can be taken if put on record by the law enforcement. Social Security is also a major problem in identity theft and is not taken as seriouse as it should be.
